Juliette deals with the death of her mother, and Rayna is confronted by Deacon about Maddie being his daughter. After the conversation, he turns to alcohol usage again, after 13 years of sobriety. Teddy's embezzling case is reinvestigated by the U.S. Attorney and he meets Peggy to make sure she doesn't reveal anything incriminating about the case. She then reveals that she's pregnant. Meanwhile, Gunnar and Scarlett deal with their relationship.

Tandy resigns in response to the news that Albert is getting promoted above her. She tells Lamar that it looks like he can only maintain good relations with one daughter at a time. Later, a man gets out of a car that is driven up in front of her, introduces himself as being from the U.S. Attorney's office, and asks to talk with her about Lamar.

But we're shown Deacon throwing up in front of his house. Gunnar comes by, seeking advice on Scarlett. Deacon asks him for help with his front door key. Gunnar finds the door already unlocked, but Deacon shuts him out. He rings up Scarlett, advise her to get her Uncle's posse over there pronto.

Whilst the priest performs the last rites at the graveyard, Avery Barkely walks up. Whilst Juliette hugs him, after hugging other people, he apologizes for gate-crashing. She tells him she's glad he's there; she has a favour to ask him. "Anything", he says.

Scarlett and Coleman arrive at Deacon's house, and Coleman gains entry, followed by Gunnar and Scarlett. "Why would you bring her here?", Deacon asks. He throws a punch at Coleman, but misses, and falls to the floor. Deacon drives Coleman to a wall, and Gunnar intervenes. Scarlett is upset. Deacon apologizes to her. Gunnar sees her out, Coleman gets Deacon to a chair, and they agree on not wanting to talk.

Emily looks down at some letters, and finds one to Juliette from her mother. Juliette reads it, and realizes that her mother had been trying to protect her.

Coleman ends a  phone conversation, "It's bad. No, you stay there". Deacon wakes up, and Coleman advises him that lots of people are worried about him. Deacon gives the impression he'll be back to AA meetings.

A man gets out of a car that is driven up in front of Tandy, and introduces himself as Matthew Brinks (or something like that) from the U.S. Attorney's office. He asks to talk with her about Lamar.  
   
At the end of the episode, at Juliette's memorial service for her mother, at the Bluebird, Deacon arrives drunk. Seeing him leave, Rayna chases him out to his car. Deacon wants to be left alone, but Rayna won't let him dirve drunk. As Juliette sings for her mother, we're briefly shown: Gunnar meeting Scarlett in a park; Rayna driving Deacon; Gunnar and Scarlett sitting on a swinging seat; Rayna and Deacon arguing; Will, seated with a girl, spotting some guy and shaking his head slightly, as if signalling to the guy not to join them; Gunnar running a hand down Scarlett's face; Deacon and Rayna arguing; Gunnar getting up, Gunnar proposing to Scarlett on bended knee and Scarlett glancing down at the ring he's offering her; Rayna and Deacon both arguing without looking ahead to an intersection where a car is crossing; and, from a different point of view, the car Rayna's driving swerving to avoid the other car, going off the road, rolling over, and landing upside down in a ditch. We get to hear Gunar's proposal, but not the arguments nor the crash; we just hear Juliette singing (to musical accompaniment), "Nothing In this World Will Ever Break My Heart Again", and Season One ends with her singing that line.

I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive is the season finale of the first season of Nashville. It was written and directed by Callie Khouri. It first aired on May 22, 2013.

Introduction

At the start of the episode, we're given some reminders of previous events. As if it were another such scene, we're shown Maddie clearly stating that she's found a paternity test that proves that her dad (Teddy) is not her biological father. 

Plot

Rayna is confronted by Deacon about Maddie being his daughter. After the conversation, he turns to alcohol usage again, after 13 years of sobriety.

Gunnar visits Will, and finds him in bed with a girl, whom Will introduces as Gwen.

Deacon gets a bartender to turn off the CMA broadcast, allowing as he isn't a country music fan that night. Later, the bartender wakes him with the words, "Hey, you don't have to go home, but you can't stay here."
